Sabanci Foundation Turkey’s Changemakers Program continues in its 6th season to share the unique stories of extraordinary people who contribute to the social development. The first Changemaker of the 6th season is SineMASAL with their project “Cinema is in the Villages Now”.
Enes Kaya is an idealist film-maker at his 20s who grew up in a village. The difficulties he faced in his childhood as well as his personality as an active citizen led him establish SineMASAL in order to organize cultural events in villages in 2007. He started his journey with his friends who were also passionate about cinema. Their objective was to enable underprivileged children and youth to develop a more positive perspective in life and imagine a better future.
SineMASAL team, under the leadership of Enes Kaya, started their work by exploring 69 villages of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia. After identifying the villages, SineMASAL took the road with 45 volunteers with their motto “Cinema is in the Villages Now” in 2013. They interacted with 7 thousand children, youth and adults in more than 30 villages of Kahramanmaras, Adiyaman, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Mardin and Diyarbakir. 87% of these people met with cinema for the first time in their lives. Arriving to the villages at dawn as a big team including volunteers from 6 different countries, SineMASAL organized different activities until late in the evening.
The second stop of SineMASAL team was Black Sea in the summer of 2014. This time with a bigger group of volunteers, they reached more than 10 thousand people in 6 different cities of Black Sea region. Under the guidance of Enes Kaya, SineMASAL brought many different activities into more than 20 thousand children’s lives living in the socially and culturally disadvantaged villages of Anatolia. They made a big difference in the lives of thousands of children by creating an experience that they will never forget.
