Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" TV program shares inspiring stories of individuals who make a difference in social and economic development.

 

The fourth episode of the program on 25 October tells the story of Dr. Mustafa Sari from the eastern province of Van. For 17 years Dr. Sarı has been working on preserving fish living in Lake Van (circumference of 400 kilometers) and developing methods to prevent illegal fishing which has almost led to the extinction of a certain species of fish.

 

Thanks to his efforts, illegal fishing has dropped from 12 tons per year to only 2 tons per year over the past 13 years while also contributing to the growth of the fishing industry- thus sustaining a livelihood for hundreds of families which make a living from Lake Van's resources.
