 THIS WEEK'S CHANGEMAKER: DR. CORUH TURKSEL DULGERGIL

Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" TV program shares inspiring stories of individuals who make a difference in social and economic development.

 

The sixth episode of Sabancı Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" tells the story of Dr. Coruh Turksel Dulgergil, who provided thousands of elementary school students with preventive dental care against tooth decay.

Working on this project since 1997, Dr. Turksel is using a method that is new to Turkey. Trained students from a medical vocational high school apply a gel to the toothbrush that contains fluoride iodide on children's teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. This treatment also encourages children to gain the habit of teeth brushing.

Dr.Turksel's project reached over 30.000 elementary school students in a several regions of Turkey. It was not only the children's dental health that was improved however; Dr. Turksel's project also produced an important economic impact, as dental treatments prove to be very costly for the Turkish economy.
