Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" TV program shares inspiring stories of individuals who make a difference in social and economic development.

 

The 19th episode of Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" tells the story of Tahsin Aksu.

Tahsin Aksu is a successful district governor and has devoted himself to the public service for the people in Van-Gevas, a small town in Eastern Turkey. After graduating from Ankara University Social Science Faculty, he worked in Ordu, Cankiri and Mardin. Since 2006 he has been working as district governor in Van-Gevas.

Tahsin Aksu has supported several projects run by women in Gevas. He initiated the establishment of a Women's NGO, organized training programs for women and public servants on gender equality and human rights of women, and encouraged applications to the funds of the leading national agency, TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). The last but not least, Aksu has conducted "Book Passport Project" which aims to encouraging reading books in Gevas. At the end of the first year of the project, 30 thousand books were read and almost 150 people received Book Passports (which are given to the people who read a certain amount of books). Furthermore, the Presidency of Turkey asked him to prepare a report explaining how to implement the project at the national level.
