Sahhanim Kanat is a volunteer who has been developing projects to help children and families who suffer the challenge of migration from rural parts of Turkey to Istanbul. Sahhanim Kanat established Basak Culture and Art Foundation with her friends in 2003. They organize painting, ceramic, theater, origami, and folk dances courses for children and youth who cannot otherwise afford these activities. They also benefit from English and Math support courses to improve their academic performance. |

The Foundation launched a project in 2003, supported by the European Union Commission in Turkey, to provide social support and services for families and their children that have come from rural parts of Turkey to Istanbul and face challenges in adapting to city life. Interviews were conducted with over 900 parents and youth living in 9 different districts of Istanbul, and meetings were organized to discuss the impact of migration on children and youth, the role of parents in child rearing, and other challenges. Psychological support was provided as needed to community members. For the written document of the program please click here...
