|Purple Certificate Program - 2009|
The third cycle of the Purple Certificate Program took place at Sabanci University Campus on 30 June-4 July 2009. A total of 248 high school teachers from the 6 project cities (Izmir, Kars, Nevsehir, Trabzon, Van, Sanliurfa) applied to attend the Purple Certificate Program. A group of Sabanci University faculty members evaluated the applications and 69 were invited to attend the program. All of the attendees successfully completed the program and were awarded ‘Purple Certificates’.
The particular topics that were covered in the 3rd Purple Certificate Program were as follows:
In addition to workshops, panels, film projections, presentations, round table discussions and colleague meetings were organized to share experiences.
The high school teachers who attended the Program also had the opportunity to discuss potential projects in their schools and concrete steps that could be taken to promote gender equality in classrooms and teaching materials.

March, 9th, 2009 - Presentation on Women’s Human Rights for International Women’s Day
For the celebration of the March, 8th International Women’s Day, a presentation on “Women’s Human Rights” was held in Haydar Akcelik Anadolu Meslek ve Kiz Meslek Lisesi, Eyup, Istanbul. Ayse Yuksel’s presentation focused on women’s and girls’ human rights and the gender inequality in Turkey and in the world. She also mentioned the progress on gender empowerment, followed by the evaluation of the UNJP’s achievements and importance of the Local Action Plans.

May 2009 Meetings in the Four Project Cities
Between April 2009 and May 2009, trips to four project cities were organized. In these trips, several meetings were organized. In each city, ‘Introduction to Gender’ workshops were held with high school teachers. During the introductory workshops, a gender awareness presentation was facilitated followed by a workshop on critical gender analysis. The gender workshop that was organized in Van, Trabzon, Sanliurfa and Nevsehir included sections as gender awareness games, gender mind-mapping, gender critical analysis of a text or an image. A total of 177 high school teachers, 106 male, 71 female, attended these meetings in the four project cities. In addition to these, in some cities, coordination meetings with the participants of the Purple Certificate Program were held.

Workshop in ERI “The Best Practices in Education” Conference
“The Best Practices in Education” Conference, which has been organized by ERI annually, aims to bring together innovative examples from all over Turkey by focusing on alternative teacher-training models. Deniz Tarba Ceylan and Ayse Yuksel from Sabanci University, Sevim Cicek and Gamze Sarisen from History Foundation held a workshop session in “The Best Practices in Education” on April 19th, 2009 at Sabancı. The workshop aimed raising gender awareness by focusing on representation of gender in school textbooks with the participation of High school teachers, Mine Tan from Ankara University and representatives from The Board of Education (Talim Terbiye Kurulu Başkanlığı) and UNICEF.

Workshop on “Gender Representation in School Textbooks”
On July 16th, 2009 at Ankara Baskent Ogretmenevi the Board of National Education hosted a panel discussion and workshop called “Gender Equality in School Textbooks”. In this daily workshop, representatives from the Ministry of National Education, the Board of Education, Prime Ministry Directorate General on the Status of Women as well as representatives from several NGOs and academicians came together to discuss issues about gender awareness and gender equality in school textbooks. Deniz Tarba Ceylan and Ayse Yuksel from Sabanci University were invited to conduct a half day workshop on gender representation and gender discrimination in school textbooks.

Workshop on “Gender and Gender Equality in School Textbooks”
A-five day "Gender Equality Training Seminar" on gender and how to improve gender equality was organized by the Department of In-Service in the Ministry of National Education and by the Board of Education at Akcakoca Teachers Center, Duzce. The target audience was a total of 95 teachers selected from all over Turkey. Ayse Yuksel from Sabanci University and Gamze Sarisen from History Foundation were invited to conduct a full day workshop on “Gender and Gender Equality in School Textbooks”.
