Purple Certificate Program (PCP) which is a component of United Nations Joint Program for Promoting the Human Rights of Women took place between 24 – 29 June 2013 at Sabanci University. From among 106 applicants from 6 pilot provinces of the Program (Aydin, Eskisehir, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Kayseri and Kocaeli) 47 teachers were invited to take part in PCP. 47 teachers received their certificates after successfully completing their 5-day intensive program. In addition, an observer from the Ministry of National Education attended each session of the Program and evaluated the implementation of PCP and the performance of teachers.


In the opening ceremony of PCP that took place at Sabanci University, Nihat Berker, rector of the University, Ahmet Sabanci, Projects and Research Unit Coordinator of Ministry of National Education and Rana Kotan, Director of Programs and International Relations of Sabanci Foundation were present.


The modules of PCP tried to inculcate in teachers effective methods to fight gender stereotypes, prejudices and discriminatory discourses related to gender. At the same time, it tried to turn teachers into role models who can pass on their newly acquired skills to their students. PSP modules were reinforced with films, reading workshops and discussion groups.

  • Creative Writing Workshop
  • Gender and Literature
  • Snow White without the Seven Dwarfs: Re-writing Tales
  • Gender and History Textbooks
  • Gender and Religion
  • Gender, Body and Health
  • Let’s Talk About Violence: Workshop on Violence, Sexual Violence and the Effect of Violence on Mental Health
  • Gender and Taboo Roles
  • Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Gender
  • Prejudices and Discrimination with Respect to Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
  • Gender and Law
  • Economic, Political and Individual Empowerment: Civil Society Experiences
  • Facilitation Workshop


In the closing ceremony that took place at Minerva Palace of Sabanci University, participant teachers received their certificates. Parallel to the closing ceremony, an evaluation session was conducted with the participation of teachers who expressed their views on the strenghts and weaknesses of PCP. These views will shape both the re-structuring of coming PCPs as well as the coming supervision meetings to be held in pilot provinces.

18 March - 29 May 2013

Delivery of Local Trainings in 6 Provinces
Between the dates of 18 March and 29 May, local trainings were delivered in 6 pilot provinces. In these meetings, basic concepts related to gender were introduced, visual and printed media materials were discussed through the lens of a gender analysis.  PCP to be held at Sabanci University in June was introduced and teachers were encouraged to make applications. 240 teachers from 6 provinces participated to these introductory local trainings.

2013 Purple Certificate Program

2013 PCP took place at Sabanci University premises between 24 and 29 June. From among 106 teachers who made an application from 6 pilot provinces, 47 were selected to be part of PCP. At the end of 5-day long workshops, these selected teachers earned their certificates.

Supervision Meetings in 6 Provinces

One of the aims of PCP is to facilitate the implementation of gender awareness projects by teachers in pilot provinces. In this vein, with the start of fall semester, Sabanci University academics paid visits to 6 pilot provinces to discuss what kind of projects could be carried out. In the supervision meetings, teachers of PCP were brought together with grantees of the Sabanci Foundation Grant Program in order to discuss the stages of project design and implementation.  

December 2013 - January 2014

Follow-up Meetings in 6 Provinces

After the supervision meetings, teachers in 6 provinces were given a period of time to develop their own project ideas and in a follow up meeting, they were expected to present these project ideas. PCP team gave feedback and suggested strategies to facilitate better execution of these project ideas.
