The European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability is an innovative initiative and a platform aimed at creating synergy between donor foundations and the other stakeholders for promoting the ratification and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Consortium was established in 2009.

 

The Consortium is led by the European Foundation Centre (EFC) and Fundacion ONCE (Spain) and was created with the aim of bringing together funders and other stakeholders to encourage and support both the ratification and the effective application of the Convention in Europe. Bringing together resources, sharing knowledge, experience and know-how are expected from the members.

 

Sabanci is the only foundation that was invited from Turkey to participate in the platform. Other founders are Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, Fondazione Casa Risparmio di Torino (Italy), Fondation de France (France), Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal), Fundacion ONCE (Spain) and The Atlantic Philanthropies (Ireland/USA).

Best Practices for the Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Report, January 2011

The European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability (of which Sabanci Foundation is a founding member) carried out a study which consists of a collection of best practices, innovative ideas, or failures out of which learning experiences can be extracted. Launched in January 2009, the study is a source of the best practices in the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities within the context of EU Disability Action Plan (DAP). The Report on Best Practices for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was published in January 2011 and had an important influence on the 2010-2020 European Disability Strategy document.

Strategy Meeting, November 2010

The members of the Consortium came together to discuss the existing activities and future plans in Dublin. During the meeting hosted by the Atlantic Philanthropies, members shared their experiences and current activities on disability and discussed the impact of the Best Practices Report on the 2010-2020 European Disability Strategy prepared by the European Union Commission. The members of the consortium also discussed the relations of the Consortium with EU Commission and member states. The group listed the future activities under certain titles consisting of advocacy and lobbying, capacity building, networking and mobilizing local funders and EU Commission relations.

 

Disability and Reasonable Adjustment Meeting, September 2010

The European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability organized a meeting to discuss the article 27 on “accommodation” of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities with the legal operators and experts from Europe. The discussions were on the definition of reasonable accommodation and its practical implications. Experts from different countries of Europe shared best practices and good examples from their own countries. An action plan and list of recommendations were prepared.

 

Knowledge Sharing Meeting, December 2009

European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability organized a meeting, which was hosted by Sabanci Foundation, to share experiences regarding the ratification and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 9 December 2009 in Istanbul. The attendees are Miguel Ángel Cabra de Luna, Fundación ONCE as Co-Chair and the representatives from EFC, The Atlantic Philanthropies, Sabanci Foundation, Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, National University of Ireland and FD Blueprint. Professor Quinn from National University of Ireland presented the study on challenges and good practices of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The members also shared their activity outputs and experiences regarding UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

 

Knowledge Sharing Meeting, May 2009

European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability organized a meeting in order to outline actions undertaken by the Consortium on 15 May 2009 in Rome. The attendees were Hywel Ceri Jones, Network of European Foundations for Innovative Cooperation (NEF), Miguel Ángel Cabra de Luna, Fundación ONCE as Co-Chairs and the members including Sabanci Foundation. Ana Mohedano Escobar, the secretariat of the Consortium informed that since the last meeting, six foundations expressed their interest in joining the Consortium and have subsequently become members. She also outlined actions undertaken by the Consortium since the last meeting. Participants have a chance to discuss the actions listed in the Consortium’s work plan and shared their activity plans regarding UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

 

Press Conference, April 2009

The European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability, aimed at promoting the ratification and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, was officially launched at the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday 1 April 2009. The launch event was attended by around 100 persons, including Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission, members of the Commission’s High Level Group on Disability (appointed by the EU Member States), representatives of civil society organizations working to defend the rights of people with disabilities, and representatives of the European Foundation Centre (EFC) and the foundations that have joined together to create the Consortium.
