|Erhan Agbaba (Season 01 - Episode 23)|
This Week's Changemaker; Erhan Agbaba Helps Promote the Self-Esteem of Children
On 14 March 2010 Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" program hosts Erhan Agbaba, a guidance counselor in an elementary school, who reaches out educators, families and children themselves to improve self-esteem of children.
Erhan Agbaba's "I Can Succeed If You Appreciate" Project criticizes education systems that evaluate children based on their grades. The project argues that children's social and cultural activities should also be appreciated.
Another one of Agbaba's projects emphasizes the positive impact of parent involvement on students' academic performance. He also developed a "Parent Education" Project, which aims to give education to parents on issues such as school-phobia and to organize seminars to discuss problems children face at school. Last but not least, Agbaba's "School Administration Based on Children's Rights" Project argues reorganization of school administration systems based on children's rights and works to raise awareness for children's rights.
Erhan Agbaba presented his projects at "Best Practices in Education Conference" organized by Education Reform Initiative, a project of the Istanbul Policy Center based at the Sabanci University, and several local workshops in different cities in Turkey. With the support of the Governorship in Istanbul, the Parent Education Project is planned to be implemented in Istanbul.
