UNJP hosted an NGO meeting on 14-15 April in Ankara within the framework of the Joint Program "To Promote and Protect Human Rights of Women and Girls". Organized by UNJP and KADER Ankara Branch, the meeting aimed the subjects of women’s issues to be discusses and the UNJP experiences to be shared.

 

Peer Sieben (UNFPA), Yildiz Tokman (KADER), Mustafa Coggun (Ministry of the Interior Affairs) and Hulya Adak (Sabanci University) delivered their opening remarks. In the first session; UNJP, UNJP’s consultant and local program facilitators (from which locations) presented updates and program achievements in respective cities. Following this, academicians and eminent women activists from national NGOs discussed the following topics:

  • The importance of women’s organizations in Joint Program
  • The role of women’s organizations in Local Equality Action Plans
  • Short descriptions of Local Equality Action Plans
  • The agenda of women’s organizations in Turkey
  • The experiences of women’s organizations in acting together

 

In the second session, three workshops were conducted with mixed groups from different national NGOs and local NGOs in which the following subjects were discussed:

  • Implementation and sustainability of Local Equality Action Plans
  • Relations with local governments
  • Women Friendly Cities Criteria

 

Some highlights and important outcomes of the meeting were:

  • UNJP found to be well-structured and well-functioning programme
  • UNJP work in Programme cities provides enabling environment for national women’s NGOs to implement programmes
  • UNJP has done a great deal of work to enhance the capacity of local women’s NGOs
  • Sabanci Foundation Grant Prgram is very useful and functional for supporting the implementation of LEAPs and enhancing the capacity of local women’s NGOs
  • Sabanci University Purple Certificate Program (to train high school teachers in gender issues) is very much appreciated by local women’s NGOs
  • Main concern of  women’s NGOs is to ensure political will to implement LEAPs
  • Criteria for women’ friendly cities should be developed to ensure effective and deserved recognition.
