Children from Turkey and Venezuela Meet for "MUSIC FOR PEACE"
During the summer period, Sabancı Foundation’s Turkey’s Changemaker’s program continues to share the unique stories of extraordinary people who contribute to the social development.
In 2005, Mehmet Selim Baki initiated the project “Music for Peace” and started organizing music lessons for children who were 7-14 years old and coming from low income groups. After 6 years, he established the Music for Peace Foundation.
Music trainings for 3000 students
In 2005 Mehmet Selim Baki started a program to offer music lessons to children in a school building in Edirnekapı. It was his dream to implement the “Music for Peace” project which in 2011 was established as a foundation. When Mehmet Selim Baki became one of the Sabancı Foundation’s Changemakers in 2010, 250 students were benefiting from music lessons. Today 700 students are receiving regular music training and the number of students has reached 3000 in total. Apart from playing the instruments, there are also courses on harmonics and music history in the training program. The lessons are held in the buildings of the Foundation and primary schools in the Edirnekapı district of Istanbul.
Venezuela- Turkey Children’s Orchestra was established
Last August, during the concert of Simon Bolivar Orchestra in İstanbul, the Maestro Abreu, who is also the founder of the orchestra “El Sistema” from Venezuela, visited Music for Peace Foundation. This visit became the first step of the cooperation between El Sistema and Music for Peace. An agreement was established between El Sistema and Music for Peace Foundation to create a Venezuelan- Turkish Children’s Orchestra with 200 members. Within the scope of the project, Music for Peace trainers will be in Karakas, the capital of Venezuela for an internship in September 2012. In 2013 joint concerts will be held both in Turkey and Venezuela. Mehmet Selim Baki aims for the Music for Peace program to be a model throughout Turkey.
