This Week's Changemaker; Sahhanim Kanat Helps Families Face the Challenge of Urban Migration
On 16 May 2010 Sabanci Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" program hosts Sahhanim Kanat, a volunteer who has been developing projects to help children and families that suffer the challenge of urban migration in Istanbul.
Sahhanim Kanat and her friends established the Basak Culture and Art Foundation in 2003. The Foundation organizes painting, ceramic, theater, origami, math, English and folklore dance courses for children and youth who are unable to afford such programs.
The Foundation launched a project in 2003, supported by the European Union Commission in Turkey, to provide social support and services for families and their children that have come from rural parts of Turkey to Istanbul and face challenges in adapting to city life. Interviews were conducted with over 900 parents and youth living in 9 different districts of Istanbul, and meetings were organized to discuss the impact of migration on children and youth, the role of parents in child rearing, and other challenges. Psychological support was provided as needed to community members.
