According to the statistics on domestic violence gathered by the police and gendarmerie between 2008 and 2012, the rate of domestic violence is 0,7 % in Kahramanmaras. Even if we consider that this rate is below Turkish average, this still corresponds to 3.483 battered women per year. Projects on violence against women have so far focused only on the training of women. However, the trainings should focus on men who are the source of violence.
- The project intends to increase the sensitivity of men with respect to violence against women.
- 8 men and 8 women from the ranks of Turkish Union of Workers of Religious Affairs Kahramanmaras Branch will receive training of trainers and these trainers will deliver 80 trainings in “kahvehane”s, i.e. coffee houses where men gather.
- It is projected that 1.000 men will receive training on gender sensitivity and prevention of violence against women.
- It is projected that at least 20% of men who received training will develop gender awareness and violence against women will drop in Kahramanmaras.
