Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra - 2018

With Sabancı Foundation taking the lead in its establishment and serving as its main supporter for the past 11 years, the Turkey Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (TUGFO), under the direction of conductor Cem Mansur, is composed of 81 young musicians selected from some of Turkey's most successful conservatories.

Having attended a training camp at Sabancı University from August 15 to September 4, the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (TUGFO) staged the first concert of the 2018 tour at Zorlu Performing Arts Center (PSM) on Tuesday, September 4.

Led by Conductor Cem Mansur, the Orchestra successfully represented Turkey in 8 concerts staged in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Poland, following the Istanbul concert.

In this year’s repertoire of the European tour, the TUGFO had “Divertimento” and “Serenade” by Leonard Bernstein, world-renowned American conductor, composer, author and pianist, who was also Cem Mansur’s mentor, in honor of his 100th birthday, as well as “Symphony No. 5” by Prokofiev and “Piano Concerto No. 24” by Mozart. “Instantanes” by Cemal Reşit Rey was also performed before music lovers in the most important concert halls in Europe.

TUGFO was accompanied by two soloists in the concerts in Europe: Alena Baeva, who has made quite a name for herself with her achievements at a young age, shared the stage with the young musicians of the orchestra performing Bernstein’s “Serenade”, and Stephen Kovacevich, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, joined the orchestra for the last leg of the European tour.

Kovacevich, a Grammy nominated artist evoking admiration with his interpretation of some great composers’ pieces, received a standing ovation at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall, an important European stage for classical music, where he performed with the young musicians.

Meeting with the audience at important halls in European to perform their exclusive repertoire every year, the young talents led by Conductor Cem Mansur, performed this year at the gorgeous Smetana Hall in Prague, the Slovak Radio Concert Studio, one of Bratislava's dominant architectural features, and Radiokulturhaus, a notable culture center in Vienna. The Vienna concert was broadcast by the Austrian Radio and reached a large audience.
