The 12th Changemaker of the 9th season of the Sabancı Foundation Turkey’s Changemakers Program is Whole Surplus that aims to minimize food waste.
Whole Surplus was founded in 2015 by two friends, Olcay Silahlı and Arda Eren, to create a technology based solution for food waste problem.
The initiative provides to manage the food surplus which is considered as waste according to quality standards of supermarket chains. Every day usable surplus foods are separated, listed in the platform and sent to the food banks that are registered to the system to reach out to people in need. The platform also provides the recycling of inconsumable wastes.
Today, Whole Surplus works in 11 cities, in cooperation with 77 different associations, food banks and soup kitchens. By this cooperation it can reach approximately 200 thousand families in need. Thus, Whole Surplus succeeded to prevent 600 tons of food waste in 2017.
Whole Surplus was initiated with a dream of two young people to minimize the food waste. Thanks to the infrastructure that they built, thousands of surplus products were transported to those in need, which made a significant contribution to the national economy. Thus, Whole Surplus created a huge difference for a more livable world.
