BACKGROUND

The increasing risk of drought and famine with the climate crisis increases the possibility of climatic migration and threatens the right to life of people living in rural areas. Violations of rights as a result of inequalities such as social insecurity, low wages and unpaid family labor, which especially women and youth are exposed to in agriculture, increase the rate of migration of the population from rural to urban areas. It is necessary to develop sustainable agricultural practices and new income models for women and youth, who are among the groups most adversely affected by the climate crisis in rural areas.

There is a need to empower local women on issues such as climate crisis, entrepreneurship and gender equality through trainings and field studies to be carried out with a focus on flax farming in Kahrat Village in Izmir Tire.

PROJECT GOALS

  • Training series will be organised on the following topics for 20 women living in the region, who want to take part in agriculture and employment and have the potential to influence their environment:
  • Gender equality, rights-based living, community participation, leadership, media literacy
  • Climate change, coping with the effects of climate change, sustainable agriculture.
  • Entrepreneurship, innovation, innovative business/income models, financial literacy
  • Flax farming will be carried out with the employment of women farmers on a ten-acre land in the vicinity of Tire Kahrat Village, which is particularly drought-stricken, and case studies will be applied for the participating women.
  • Women participating in the trainings will be informed about potential business ideas centred on flax farming and road maps will be determined for at least 5 participants.
  • Restoration works will be carried out for the opening of the Flax Things Workshop.
  • A documentary will be shot to contribute to the dissemination of the work and outputs of the project.

PROJECT RESULTS

  • 24 women attended trainings organized under 4 different themes and learned about issues such as their own rights, gender equality, entrepreneurship, flax farming and climate crisis.
  • During the trainings they received, the women experienced the processes of flax plant from planting to flowering, harvesting to breaking the stalk and processing with visits to agricultural lands and factories. They also gained ideas for business development focused on flax.
  • The women who attended the trainings implemented one of the entrepreneurial ideas they learned by creating a brand called Kahrat’tan Şeyler.
