Background
The low literacy rates of parents living in Tarlabasi create challenges for the residents in reaching public services. Children living in Tarlabasi represent their families on daily activities and in relations with government agencies. Children growing up in Tarlabasi are forced to take adult responsibilities therefore cannot enjoy their childhood and they are unaware of their rights.
Project Goals
- In Istanbul, Tarlabasi:
- 20 children between the ages of 10-13 will gather at weekly meetings to attend thematic seminars and workshops such as children’s rights, environment and disability.
- For every thematic seminar, children will publish a magazine in every 3 months.
- During magazine production process, children will make interviews, take photographs and write columns, all of which will help them develop collective working skills.
- After the magazines are distributed, campaigns, meetings with public officials and other awareness-raising activities will be organized. By this way, the problems of children in Tarlabasi will be recognized by the public.
Project Results
- In Istanbul, Tarlabasi:
- 30 children between the ages of 10-15 gathered at weekly meetings to attend thematic workshops and meetings such as environment and recycling, disability rights, school and women's rights.
- For every thematic topic, children published a magazine in every 3 months (in total 4 magazines).
- During magazine production process, children made interviews, took photographs and wrote columns, all of which helped them develop collective working skills.
- The magazines are distributed through social media channels. Children attended a radio program called Children's Voice at Open Radio and shared information about the magazines and the problems they face in everyday life.
