Purpose : To integrate women with disabilities into different branches of athletics and use this as a tool to encourage people with disabilities to participate in social life and change prejudices against disability in the society

Background

There are limited number of athletes with disabilities in individual branches and %75 of registered athletes with disabilities are men. The common perception in society is to respond to the disability issue through charity. In order to change this perception role models should come forward in areas like sports. An awareness on rights of people with disabilities should be created.

Project Goals

  • In Adana:
    • 10 women with disabilities aged between 15 and 25 will be trained as professional athletes.
    • Women selected as candidate athletes will be supported in their formal education attending classes on mathematics, science and foreign languages.
    • Awareness panels will be organized in 4 universities and 16 secondary education institutions.
    • Short videos will be filmed on athletics trainings and awareness panels.

Project Results

  • In Adana:
    • 9 women with disabilities aged between 13 and 25 will were attended atletics trainings for 7 months. 3 women athletes with disabilities won the first place at Turkey Physically Disabled Athletics Championship.
    • Women selected as candidate athletes were supported in their formal education attending classes on mathematics, science and foreign languages. 2 women athletes with disabilities decided to return to distant education after the classes.
    • Awareness panels were organized in 2 universities and 6 secondary education institutions. In total 715 people participated the panels.
    • 2 short videos were filmed on athletics trainings and shared through social media.
