Bringing a Heritage of Thousands of Years to Light

Since 1990, we at the Sabancı Foundation have proudly supported the archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Metropolis, nestled between the villages of Yeniköy and Özbey in İzmir’s Torbalı district. Thanks to our long-term commitment, this remarkable cultural heritage site—whose history stretches from the Late Neolithic period to the Ottoman era—has become accessible to all, inviting the public to engage with Türkiye’s rich historical tapestry.
Over the years, excavations have uncovered significant structures such as the Hellenistic Theater, Bouleuterion, Stoa, Roman bath complexes, mosaicked halls, peristyle houses, and ancient streets—alongside more than 11,000 artifacts including ceramics, coins, sculptures, and architectural fragments. Today, many of these finds are proudly displayed in prominent museums across the region.
By supporting Metropolis, we ensure that this unique legacy is not only preserved but also shared—empowering people from all walks of life to explore, learn from, and be inspired by the deep roots of Anatolian civilization.

Metropolis, A City, Its People, Their Way of Life

We proudly supported the publication of "Metropolis: City, Life, People," sharing the latest findings from the Metropolis archaeological excavations that began in 1989. Featuring contributions from 22 experts, the book presents clear and accessible insights into the city’s history, growth, and significance, enriched with rich visuals. Its innovative design sets it apart from typical archaeological works, and the book has been widely acclaimed and cited internationally, reflecting its valuable contribution to the field.

Time Travel in Metropolis

The Time Travel in Metropolis Project aims to connect children with archaeology through interactive tours and hands-on workshops, fostering cultural awareness and active learning. Since 2022, it has reached 3,027 primary school students from Torbalı’s village schools, focusing on grades 3 to 5, and expanded to include kindergartens and high schools in the region. Additionally, through the Erasmus+ Accreditation Program, 250 international students from 10 European countries have participated in the project’s tours and workshops, enriching their understanding of ancient cultures.
