Supported by the Sabancı Foundation for the last six years, the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (TYPO), set off on this year’s musical journey with concert performances at the international Taormina Festival in Sicily, Italy. The Orchestra offered a true musical feast to spectators in this first tour following an intense three-week camp period. The first “Orchestra in Residence” to be invited to Taormina Festival from Turkey ensuing its accomplished performance in Italy last year, the Turkish Youth Philharmonic Orchestra’s achievements are a genuine source of pride.
Astounding Musical Skills and Sound Balance of TYPO Engender An Extraordinary Interpretation of Tosca
Young musicians under the leadership of Conductor Cem Mansur performed on the spectacular Teatro Antico di Taormina stage within the scope of the Taormina Festival. In addition to the performance of Puccini’s celebrated Tosca opera, the Orchestra presented 2 symphonic programs. Staging a staggering performance built around extraordinary musical skills and sound balance, the Orchestra got full marks from the audience upon their flawless interpretation of Tosca. In an opera where immaculate performance by the orchestra is crucial, the young musicians performed with an astonishing mastery and success acknowledged by a standing ovation that persisted for minutes. Praised generously by the international press, the Orchestra’s performance was acclaimed through remarks like, “The masterpiece found new life in the hands of brilliant and distinguished Turkish youth at this fundamental monument of Sicily”.
Aspendos Ancient Theater Awaits the Young Musicians
Ensuing Taormina Festival, the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is preparing to give concerts in Turkey at Aspendos Ancient Theater and Zorlu Performance Arts Center, after which they will head back to Italyupon its invitation as thecurrent President of the Council of the EU. Following concerts on the most prestigious stages of Bologna, Rovigo, Rome and Milan, Germany concerts will conclude the tour program. In addition to performances in Bad Wörishofen and Berlin, the Orchestra will participate in seminars regarding the immigrant communities of the city.
The Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is composed of 100 students who are picked from conservatories across Turkey upon an examination process. The orchestra carries out joint projects under the roof of polyphonic universal music with a view to promote Turkish people and Turkish culture at the global scale, while at the same time striving to raise distinguished young musicians for the country.
In addition to Sabancı Foundation, the Orchestra sustains its activities upon support of the Promotion Fund of the Prime Ministry, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ford Otosan, Bell Holding, Boyner Holding, Korab Holding, Ege Holding, MNG, Yünsa and Brisa.
