Metropolis Excavations 2023
Sabancı Foundation, which has supported scientific excavations in the region by contributing to the Metropolis Lovers Association (MESEDER) since 2003, continued this support in 2023. At the "Great Goddess City" of Metropolis, which was opened to visitors as an archaeological site in 2015, discoveries to date include a 2,500-year-old headless female statue, a Roman Bathhouse, a Palaestra (a sports facility), a cult area dedicated to Zeus, a Dionysian mosaic, corridors, cisterns, and traces of a large public building with mosaic floors and a city square, along with over 11,000 small artifacts.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the excavation work in 2023, the book titled “Metropolis: City, Life, People” was published with the Foundation's support. The book presents the results of the work carried out in the city to readers in simple language and narrative, based on the traces of different civilizations that lived here. This book, which is the product of five years of work, consists of 444 pages and 30 different chapters. The book includes contributions from 22 local and foreign researchers who are experts in their fields. To promote the book, a press tour of the ancient city was organized.
